Lexical SatFEPS ( Sat ellite F ront- E nd P rocessing S ystem) controls the front-end hardware (Lexical USB 2.0 Ingest Module, receiver and antenna controller) to accurately receive timely data from both polar-orbiting and geo-stationary satellites.

O rbit P rediction

This feature is required only for polar-orbiting satellites. Polar-orbiting satellites orbit around the Earth periodically. Data can be received when the satellite’s footprint is within the range of the antenna. To determine when the satellite’s footprint is within range of the antenna requires the satellite’s orbital path to be predicted.

Orbit prediction is carried out using information provided by TLEs and Tbus. SatFEPS automatically downloads the latest TLEs and Tbus through the Internet to ensure timely and accurate orbit prediction.

A ntenna C ontrol

This feature is only required for polar-orbiting satellites. Polar-orbiting satellites are non-stationary relative to the ground station. The antenna needs to track the satellite to maintain a line of sight as the satellite passes over the station. Line of sight is required for the reception of data transmitted by the satellite.

Orbit-prediction allows SatFEPS to identify when the satellite is within the range of the antenna. Coordinates of the satellite are sent to the antenna controller which will in turn command the tracking antenna to point to the correct direction.

D ata I ngest

SatFEPS communicates with Lexical USB 2.0 Ingest Module to ingest the satellite data. Every scanline received can be displayed to give user a quicklook of the received data.

D ata P reprocessing

SatFEPS can automatically convert the raw data received to Level 1A5 or Level 1B for further processing (Not available for MODIS).

Ingesting data from FY-2

R eceiver C ontrol

When different satellite data are to be received using the same antenna and receiver, SatFEPS can communicate with the receiver to change its frequency to match the different satellites’ transmission frequency. This feature requires the receiver to support software control for frequency switching. Lexical recommends Quorum’s Metcom DSP Drivebay Receiver.
